An incredible opportunity to experience what it is like to be an authentic dog ‘musher’, this unforgettable winter adventure husky expedition takes you deep into the wilds of northern Finland and up beyond the Arctic Circle. Spend five remarkable days on husky safari in Finland, looking after your own team of huskies and driving them through the pristine wilderness of the high Arctic.
Traveling in small groups, in the company of an experienced guide, you will skirt the edge of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, negotiating your team of dogs along ancient forest trails and across fells and frozen lakes. With just the sound of the excited dogs and the runners on the snow to accompany you, you’ll experience some of the cleanest air and most breathtaking landscapes in northern Europe.
Spending your evenings of this husky expedition in remote wilderness cabins, you’ll get even closer to nature, as you forego running water and electricity in favour of warm fires, the company of the dogs and, hopefully, the dazzling displays of the Northern Lights.
- Experience an exhilarating 5-day husky safari on Finland through the Arctic wilderness.
- Enjoy the opportunity to mush and care for your own team of dogs.
- Watch for the Aurora Borealis in the remote wilds of northern Finland.
- A chance to experience the rugged life of a husky musher.
Kittilä - Munio
Arriving at Kittilä airport today you will then transfer the short distance on to Muonio, lying in the far northwestern corner of the country, above the Arctic Circle. Arriving at the Torreseippi Lodge in time to enjoy a welcome dinner, you’ll then spend this evening in a cosy cabin close to the magnificent landscapes of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.
After breakfast on your first morning you will be issued with your equipment for the adventure ahead and meet your guide, who will then give you a brief run-down on the programme for the coming few days. Then it is on to meet your team of dogs and pack the sleds. After a short lesson on how to handle the sleds you set off, heading through a breathtaking landscape of snow-covered forest and frozen lakes towards a series of remote wilderness cabins. (B,L,D)
Days 3 - 6
As you grow more accustomed to the dogs and the sleds, the days take on a familiar pattern. You will learn to take care of your own team huskies and help with the preparation of meals, spending each night at a different location. The huts are simple but comfortable, with saunas and wilderness toilets, but no electricity, providing a chance to really appreciate the stunning Arctic nights. Breakfast and dinner will be taken at the huts, with lunch served up by an open fire in the wilderness. (B,L,D)
Your last day on the trail sees you covering some 25 to 30 kilometres today, as you make your way back to Munio through the serene Arctic winter scenery. Stopping to enjoy a final outdoor lunch beside a warming fire, you’ll return to the lodge this afternoon and check back into your cabins, in time to enjoy a relaxing sauna before dinner. (B,L,D)
